Top-Ranked Athenas Tennis Defeats No. 3 Chicago 6-1

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team dominated doubles and took three straight wins in singles to earn a 6-1 win over No. 3 Chicago on Thursday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

The win improves the record for the Athenas to 11-1 on the season, including 9-0 against Division III competition, with two of them coming against Chicago, the first a 4-1 win in the finals match of the ITA Indoor Championship. The Maroons slip to 7-4 on the season with the loss.

CMS dropped the doubles point four times in its Division III matches before coming back to win, but this time they controlled all three courts. Lindsay Eisenman and Celestina Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne won a 6-2 decision at No. 1, Rebecca Kong and Ananya Sriniketh took a 6-1 win at No. 2, and Bell Zhou and Leah Baroudi finished off the sweep with a 6-3 win at No. 3.

That point proved to be important, as CMS was able to get the clinch with three straight-set singles wins, with the other three going to a third pro-set tiebreaker after the team win was decided. Sriniketh was the first to finish, taking a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, before Zhou earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4.

Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne picked up the clinch at No. 6 in a hard-fought battle, taking a 7-5, 6-4 win which took the pressure off the other three courts. Eisenman came back for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-7 win at No. 1 singles for the fifth CMS point, and Kong prevailed with a 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 win at No. 2 singles to end the match at 6-1 in favor of the Athenas.

CMS will be off for the next week before returning to action next Thursday against MIT.
