CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Rebecca Kong and
Ananya Sriniketh took a 6-0 win in doubles and followed up with singles wins to lead the top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team to a 6-1 win over MIT on Thursday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the win, CMS moves to 12-1 on the year and remains perfect against Division III competition, with the only loss coming to Division I UC Riverside (without No. 1 singles and doubles player Lindsey Eisenman). MIT falls to 7-2 with the loss.
Kong and Sriniketh won the first doubles match at No. 2, and Eisenman teamed with
Celestina Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne for a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles to give CMS a 1-0 lead heading into singles. MIT was able to earn a win at No. 3 doubles in a tiebreaker after the Athenas had clinched the doubles point.
The Athenas then dominated at the bottom of the ladder in singles, with Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6, followed by
Leah Baroudi winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.
Bell Zhou then provided the clinch with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4, to put the Athenas ahead 4-0.
Kong had a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles to extend the lead to 5-0, and Sriniketh shook off a slow start for a 0-6, 7-5, 10-4 win at No. 3 singles. MIT got its lone point with a 10-8 third-set tiebreaker win at No. 1 singles.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow for a pair of home matches, taking on Middlebury at 12:30 p.m. and Cal Lutheran at 4:30 p.m.
