Top-Ranked Athenas Tennis Outlasts No. 6 Middlebury, Adds Win over Cal Lutheran

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team dropped the doubles point in both matches, but swept singles as it took a pair of 6-1 wins over No. 6 Middlebury and SCIAC rival Cal Lutheran on Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. 

With the wins, CMS moves to 14-1 on the year and 2-0 in the SCIAC, and remains perfect in Division III play at 12-0. Middlebury falls to 6-4, and Cal Lutheran slips to 7-2. 

Five of the six singles matches went to a full three sets in the win over Middlebury, but the Athenas were able to dig down for wins in all of them. Celestina Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne teamed with Lindsay Eisenman for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, and then won her singles match at No. 6 in straight sets (6-0, 6-3) to tie the match at 1-1. 

The other five courts all went the distance, and Leah Baroudi gave CMS the lead to stay with a comeback win at No. 5 singles (1-6, 6-2, 6-3). Eisenman then controlled her third set at No. 1 singles to win 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 and give CMS a 3-1 lead. 

The clinch came from Ananya Sriniketh at No. 4, who dominated hte first set and then regrouped in the third for a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 win to put CMS ahead 4-1. Rebecca Kong overcame a 6-2 defeat in the first set for a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 2, and Bell Zhou earned a win in a second-set tiebreaker to prevail 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 and complete the singles sweep. 

Against Cal Lutheran, Shifali Dinesh and Georgia Garrett earned a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles, but the Regals were able to win 7-5 at No. 1 and No. 2 to earn the doubles point. 

Rachel Garton was the first singles winner against the Regals, taking a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4, and Kong and Sriniketh finished with identical 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to put the Athenas in front 3-1. 

Garrett provided the clinch with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6, and Dinesh followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 to stretch the lead to 5-1. Macy Garwood capped off the singles sweep with a 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 5. 

CMS will be back in action next weekend for a doubleheader, taking on UC Santa Cruz and Chapman on Saturday.
