CLAREMONT, Calif. - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team moved to 14-0 on the season with a 6-1 win over Trinity (Texas) on the opening day of the Stag-Hen Invitational on Friday.
The Stags also took a 1-0 win on Bowdoin after a closely-contested doubles session in the semifinals. The singles portion of the Bowdoin match was postponed to Saturday morning due to the extreme heat in Claremont.
CMS took the doubles point as
Josh Kim and
Sibi Raja broke a deadlock with a 6-3 win at No. 2, after Advik Mareedy and
Caleb Settles had started out doubles play with a 6-2 win at No. 1.
Kim then earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles, and Raja followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 to quickly give the Stags a 3-0 lead. Mareedu secured the clinch with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 1 to make the score 4-0.
Amrith Kodumuri and
Henry Wilson then followed with identical 7-5, 6-2 wins at No. 6 and No. 5 to finish off the Stag scoring.
CMS came from behind against doubles to earn the sweep, as Settles and Mareedu earned a 6-4 win at No. 1 on a Mareedu return winner. Kim and Raja secured the clinch with a 7-5 win at No. 2, getting a key break at 5-5 before Raja served it out.
Anirudh Reddy and Pham made it a clean sweep with a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreaker win.
The Stags and Bowdoin will finish their match at 9 a.m. tomorrow, before a 90-minute break, when the first-place and third-pace matches will take place. Tufts and Babson will meet in the other semifinal, after they defeated Chicago and Pomona-Pitzer, respectively.
