LA CROSSE, Wis. -
Will Householter had 18 points, putting him over 1000 for his three-year career, and
Reid Jones added 17, but host Wisconsin-La Crosse pulled away in the second half for a 79-62 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the NCAA Regional Finals on Saturday.
The loss concludes the CMS season at 23-5 after its third straight NCAA Division III Tournament bid. UW La Crosse improves to 24-6 and moves on to the Round of 16 next weekend.
Householter came into the game with 998 points, and hit the 1000 mark with a jumper in the early going, before ending the day with 1016 in his career with a full season left.
CMS was within 41-38 early in the second half after baskets by Householter and
Joey Kennedy. But the score at 43-40, the Eagles went on a 15-0 run to take charge.
Householter hit a three-pointer to stop the bleeding with 10:37 to go, but the Stags could only get as close as 14 the rest of the way on a
James Frye putback.
CMS jumped out to a 17-9 lead early on a
Reid Jones fast break layup, but the Eagles took a 25-21 lead with 6:21 left in the half on a Devon Fielding three-pointer. Kennedy and Householter hit two straight baskets to tie it up 25-25, and
Cahal Connolly tied it 29-29 with a layup with 3:05 left in the half.
UW La Crosse went on a 7-0 run, but Jones helped stem the momentum with a three-pointer to make it a 36-32 game heading into the half.
Kennedy had nine points and 11 rebounds for the Stags, just missing another double-double after 24 points and 16 rebounds in the opening round yesterday against Aurora. Connolly had 13 points and eight rebounds in his final game with the Stags.
CMS will look to get back to the national stage next year again, needing to replace Connolly, Frye and
Luke Jacobson from this year's 23-win team.
