CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team capped off a 7-0 season in SCIAC play with a 6-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer, in a match that started on Saturday night before rain hit, and was completed on Sunday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the win, CMS now stands at 28-1 on the season and completes its 20th straight undefeated season in league matches. CMS has now won 177 SCIAC-sponsored matches in a row, including 163 straight conference matches, and 14 SCIAC Tournament matches since the league went to the four-team postseason format in 2018.
Doubles on Saturday night were tightly contested, with two of the three courts going to tiebreakers.
Anirudh Reddy and
Henry Wilson won 6-3 at No. 3, and
Advik Mareedu and
Caleb Settles clinched the doubles point, with a 7-4 tiebreaker win at No. 1. Pomona-Pitzer won a 7-5 tiebreaker at No. 2 to avoid the sweep, but CMS was able to take the 1-0 lead into singles.
Mareedu was the first to finish singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win, after finishing his first set on Saturday quickly before the rain came.
Henry Wilson then made it 3-0 in favor of the Stags with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3, and Settles secured the team victory with a similarly dominant 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Warren Pham aded a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2, making the team score 5-0, before the Stags and Sagehens split two competitive battles at No. 4 and No. 5.
Sibi Raja was able to come away with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-3 win at No. 4, while Pomona-Pitzer was able to salvage a point at No. 5, where Tanner Ige won 7-6, 6-4.
CMS will open SCIAC Tournament play on Wednesday at home against Caltech, and the Stags would earn the right to host the championship match on Friday with a win.
