Athenas Tennis Knocks Off Pomona-Pitzer 5-2 for SCIAC Regular Season Title

CLAREMONT, Calif. - After falling behind 1-0 after doubles on Saturday night before rain interrupted the match, the top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team resumed on Sunday and controlled singles to take a 5-2 win over Pomona-Pitzer to secure the regular season SCIAC title and the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

With the win, CMS improves to 21-1 on the year and 7-0 in the SCIAC, including 21 straight wins since a 4-3 loss to UC Riverside on opening day in January. Pomona-Pitzer, which is ranked No. 21 in Division III, slips to 9-7 overall and 6-1 in conference matches.

Bell Zhou and Leah Baroudi won in both singles and doubles, earning a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles on Saturday night, although the Sagehens won at No. 1 and No. 2. Sunday's singles action saw Celestina Cedillo-Yavson de Pradenne level the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, coming back from down 3-0 in the second set with six straight wins.

Baroudi picked up a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 4 singles, and Ananya Sriniketh earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2, bringing the Athenas within one point of a clinch. Shifali Dinesh came through with the win at No. 6 to secure the team victory for the Athenas, controlling the tiebreaker in the second set 7-2 for a 6-2, 7-6 victory.

Zhou added a fifth point with a comeback win at No. 3, winning 3-6, 6-4, 10-7, while the Sagehens picked up their lone win at No. 1 singles, where Lauren Rha edged Rebecca Kong 7-6, 6-3.

CMS will be back in action on Thursday for the SCIAC Semifinals, with the championship match on Saturday at home if the Athenas advance.
