CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned a 4-0 win over Caltech in the semifinals of the SCIAC Tournament on Wednesday evening at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the win, CMS moves to 29-1 on the year and will face Pomona-Pitzer in the SCIAC Championship on Friday night at home, beginning at 6 p.m. The Beavers slip to 10-7 on the season with the loss.
CMS controlled doubles to get the quick upper hand, with
Josh Kim and
Sibi Raja earning a 6-0 win at No. 2.
Advik Mareedu and
Caleb Settles picked up a 6-1 win at No. 1 to secure the doubles point, leaving the match at No. 3 unfinished, where
Henry Wilson and
Anirudh Reddy were closing in on a win, up 5-2.
Settles and Mareedu were then the first two to pick up singles wins, with Settles earning a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 to give CMS a 2-0 lead. Mareedu finished off his match 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, and Kim provided the clinch by coming back from 0-3 in the second set for a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 5.
The match halted once the Stags secured the win, as Wilson was closing in as well at No. 3, leading 6-1, 5-2. Warren Phan (6-2, 3-2 at No. 2) and Raja (6-2, 2-1) were also up a set, and ahead in the second, when the match was called.
CMS just defeated Pomona-Pitzer 6-1 on Saturday in the regular season finale, and will meet again for the SCIAC title on Friday. The Stags will try to win their seventh SCIAC Postseason Tournament in seven tries, since the league adopted the four-team format in 2018, and extend their unbeaten streak in SCIAC-sponsored matches to 179, dating back to 2005. CMS has won 165 SCIAC regular season matches in a row, as well as 13 SCIAC Postseason Tournament matches in a row.
