CHATTANOOGA, Calif. -
Lindsay Eisenman and
Rebecca Kong earned a straight-set win in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Doubles competition on Friday afternoon at the McCallie School, moving on to tomorrow's quarterfinal round.
Eisenman and Kong defeated Mariella Congeli and Ivy Wilson of Sewanee 6-1, 6-2 to make it through to the quarterfinals, the first step towards a nationals sweep, after the duo won the ITA Cup doubles national title in the fall.
The Athenas will next play Katalina Wang and Hannah Kassaie of Case Western tomorrow in the quarterfinals, which will start not before 2 p.m. local time, although rain in the forecast will likely result in a delayed schedule as the tournament moves indoors.
CMS fell in the opening round in singles in all three matches, with
Ananya Sriniketh going three sets before falling to Eliana Hanna of WashU, which won the national title last year and finished as the runner-up this year.
Sriniketh won the first set in a tiebreaker, actually winning the tiebreaker via a 7-0 shutout, but Hanna took the next two sets 6-3, 6-3. Kong also fell in three sets to Sarena Biria of Chicago, and Eisenman fell in two to Alessandra Sikharulidze of Babson, denying her the chance of winning back-to-back singles titles.
Eisenman will still try to complete the NCAA sweep, after winning the team national title as a first-year in 2023, and the singles national title as a junior last year. She and Kong are three wins away from adding a doubles title to that resume as well.
