Jesse Purcell, MS, ATC

Jesse Purcell joined the athletic training staff at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in December of 2018, returning to Claremont after graduating from Scripps College in 2010. During her time at Scripps she was a member of the 5C Claremont Colleges Rowing Club and worked in the CMS athletic training room as an Athletic Training Student Aide with long-time mentor Steve Graves. After graduating with a degree in psychology, Purcell earned her master of science degree from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, specializing in kinesiology and rehabilitation science.

In addition to being part of the Sports Medicine staff Purcell finds fulfilling work in being part of the CMS Title IX and 7C Teal Dot Committees. Purcell has been a co-chair of the CMS Title IX Committee since 2022 and helped create the current rotational education programming for all student-athletes which had its successful inaugural year in 2023-24. Purcell is Teal Dot (TD) trained, she has been a facilitator since 2019 and then joined the 7C Teal Dot Committee as a representative for CMC in ’22. It’s been her mission to get all 21 sports teams Teal Dot trained in bystander intervention and helping students understand the important role we as a community play in keeping our campus safe and preventing power-based personal violence across the 7Cs.

Purcell has been developing her interest and nutrition education knowledge since becoming an athletic trainer and has taken on various roles at each institution prioritizing nutrition education for student-athletes. She was a member of the athletics performance nutrition committee at UCSD, ran the performance table 3G (Gaels Grab-n-Go) at St. Mary’s College of CA and most recently obtained a certification as a nutrition coach in ’22. Purcell shares her talents and passion for fueling athletes at CMS by doing one-on-one nutrition coaching and educating teams through team talks and social media. She’s also responsible for the the creations of the Dorm Room Recipes Cookbook and Nutrition Page on the CMS Athletics website (see the nutrition page for more info on how to set up a 1-on-1 nutrition coaching appointment).

Prior to her time at CMS Purcell worked as an athletic trainer in every setting from secondary school and club sports to NCAA DI athletics and covered a plethora of sports. Some of her non-traditional favorites include fencing, rowing, and dragon boat! Previous schools she’s covered include: St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga, CA from 2016-2018, UC San Diego from 2014-2016 and from 2013-2014 as an independent contractor and head AT for Branham High School in San Jose, CA.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee Purcell currently lives in Upland with her husband Andrew and their dog Gidget. They spend their free time traveling the globe, soaking up the CA rays and watching movies.
