CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team held a 10-0 lead late in the first half, but Chapman scored two touchdowns in the closing minutes to take a 14-10 lead into the break, and then used some big plays from its defense and special teams in the second half to pull away for a 41-13 win over the Stags on Saturday afternoon at Zinda Field.
With the win, Chapman moves to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the SCIAC, while CMS suffers its first defeat and slips to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the league.
The Panthers had a one-yard drive in the second half after Jacob Gaudi returned an interception down to the one-yard line to give Chapman a 21-13 lead. Amir Adams had a 60-yard punt return to make it 34-13 and Kaulin Post returned a fumble 15 yards for another score to make the final 41-13 on a day in which Chapman only had 289 yards of total offense.
Justin Edwards had a two-yard scoring run to open the scoring and
Rich Brutto made two field goals from 38 and 40 yards.
Joey Asta led the CMS defense with 13 tackles (eight solo), including a sack.
CMS will try to bounce back next week when it hosts La Verne for a 1 p.m. contest at Zinda Field. The Stags and Chapman will have a rematch at Chapman on Nov. 2, which CMS will need to win in order to earn the division title and a chance to play in the SCIAC Championship game on Nov. 16.
