PASADENA, Calif. - After a scoreless first half,
Liam Hall and
John Laidlaw scored goals for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team in the second half, as the Stags came away with a 2-0 road win over Caltech on Saturday.
With the win, CMS improves to 9-2-1 on the year and 5-2 in the SCIAC, after picking up a pair of key road wins this week at La Verne and Caltech. Caltech slips to 6-5-2 overall and 1-4-2 in the SCIAC with the loss.
The Stags came out and put heavy pressure on the Beavers in the opening minutes, as
James Gomez forced a save from Ethan Hamel just one minute in, and
Collin Ross took two shots 30 seconds apart. The Stags had a flurry of corner kicks before the 20th minute, but the game settled in, and Hamel didn't need to make his second save until the closing seconds when
Gray Mollenkamp tried to convert a corner.
The corner kick magic finally came for CMS just 5:35 into the second half, when
Christopher Kim took a corner and Hall was able to finish to put the Stags in front. CMS protected the lead well, with
Miles Demarest coming up with a save in the 78th minute the one time he was called on, and then Laidlaw was able to seal it in the 84th minute off a feed from
Rafael Otero.
CMS finished with a 15-7 edge in shots and a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks on the day.
The Stags will be back in action on Wednesday when they host defending SCIAC Champion Occidental for a 7 p.m. contest.
