CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team honored its senior class prior to the game, and three of the honorees (
Gigi Adiyia,
Tori Holden and
Annie McKinley) scored goals, as the Athenas took a 3-1 win over Caltech on Saturday afternoon at Pritzlaff Field.
With the win, CMS improves to 7-2-3 overall and 5-2 in the SCIAC, while Caltech sees its record slip to 2-8-1 and 1-6 in the league.
Adiyia, Holden and McKinley were joined by
Kaitlyn Helfrich and
Ava Schmitt as the pregame honorees from the Class of 2025, while
Emma Fogg (illness) was unable to attend and start in her usual center back position. CMS wasted little time in getting refocused after the ceremony as Adiyia scored just 35 seconds in off a cross from Carmel Randloph.
Caltech answered right back at the 3:33 mark with a goal from Jennifer Solgaard to make it a 1-1 game before the contest was even four minutes old, and the score stayed there until the 70th minute, when the Athenas earned a penalty kick. Holden stepped up to the spot, and buried home the eventual game-winner.
McKinley tacked on an insurance goal just under five minutes later to push the lead to 3-1, converting off an assist from
Riley Zitar. The Athenas, who held a 20-1 advantage in shots for the game, were able to cruise in down the stretch and finish off the two-goal win. Haleigh Gardner had a strong effort the Beavers in goal with 11 saves to keep her team in it.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night when it travels to Occidental for a 7 p.m. contest.
