WHITTIER, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team used goals from
Annie McKinley and
Cate Lewison to pick up a big 2-0 road win over Whittier on Wednesday evening, keeping alive its hopes for a share of the regular season league title.
CMS improves to 11-2-3 on the season and 9-2 in the SCIAC, and hosts first-place Pomona-Pitzer (9-1-1) in the regular season finale on Saturday. The Athenas can leapfrog over the Sagehens with a win, and tie Cal Lutheran (10-2) for first place, although the Regals would earn the top seed in the league tournament due to a head-to-head win over CMS in September.
McKinley put CMS ahead at the 16:17 mark when she headed in a corner kick from
Riley Zitar, marking the fourth time this season that the two have connected on a corner kick. The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime, and
Cate Lewison was able to get loose in the box just 8:04 into the second half to make it a 2-0 game, with
Tori Holden earning an assist on the play.
McKinley and the defense then locked things down the rest of the way, holding Whittier to only two shots after halftime, neither of which were on target.
Sadie Brown had three saves in the first half to get the shutout for the Athenas.
Carmel Randolph,
Ivy Doran and
Ava Allen started on the back four, and
Emma Fogg returned to action and played 60 minutes off the bench after missing the previous three games due to illness.
CMS will host Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday to determine postseason seedings and home field advantage. Pomona-Pitzer can secure the regular season title and the top seed with the win, and force CMS to travel to Cal Lutheran for the semifinals. A tie would put CMS and Pomona-Pitzer against each other at Pomona-Pitzer in the semifinals, while a CMS win would create a rematch right back at Pritzlaff Field.
