CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Rafael Otero converted a second-half penalty kick for his eighth goal of the season as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening at Pritzlaff Field.
With the win, CMS improves to 7-2-1 on the season and 3-2 in the SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer drops its record to 2-6-2 overall and 0-5-1 in the SCIAC with the loss.
Nico Del Villar drew the penalty kick when he cut into the penalty area from the left side and was clipped from behind just 5:29 into the second half. Otero stepped to the spot and drilled the penalty kick into the net for his team-high eighth goal of the year.
Pomona-Pitzer had to play down a man for the final 25 minutes of the game after a red card was issued, and weren't able to get a shot off until the final minute, when
Miles Demarest was able to make a save from long distance to secure the win.
CMS held an 18-8 edge in shots, as Jasper Broad made 13 saves in the Pomona-Pitzer net to keep the Sagehens in it, including a couple of diving saves on Otero in the flow of play.
Both teams had goals waved off on set pieces in the first half, with the Sagehens have a corner kick goal early in the half disallowed due to a foul in the box, and the Stags having one waved off late in the half for a hand ball.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night when it travels to La Verne for a 7 p.m. contest.
