Helfrich's Late Goal Gives Athenas Soccer 1-0 Win Over La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Kaitlyn Helfrich scored off a Cate Lewison cross in the 79th minute to give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team a 1-0 win over La Verne on Wednesday night at Pritzlaff Field.

With the win, CMS improves to 6-2-3 overall and 4-2 in the SCIAC, moving up into fourth place. La Verne slips to 4-5-4 overall and 1-3-2 in the SCIAC.

Most of the game was played between the penalty boxes, as CMS held a 9-1 edge in total shots and a 3-1 edge in shots on goal. The contest seemed like it was destined for a 0-0 tie, before the Athenas were able to break through.

Lewison started the play when she was along the right sideline, and then cut back near the corner flag to beat a defender and get inside the penalty area. She sent a low cross to the top of the six-yard box, and Helfrich was able to get a foot on it and knock it down. The ball took a bounce past a La Verne defender, and Helfrich was able to one-time a shot inside the left post to put CMS in front 1-0 with 11:23 left to go.

CMS was able to lock down defensively the rest of the way, as center backs Annie McKinley and Emma Fogg helped keep the Leopards away from the CMS penalty area. Sadie Brown made one save for the Athenas to get the shutout.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday for Senior Day against Caltech at 11 a.m. The six Athena seniors will be honored prior to the game, including Helfrich, McKinley and Fogg, as well as Gigi Adiyia, Tori Holden and Ava Schmitt
