CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Justin Edwards of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team earned a selection to the D3football.com National Team of the Week following his historic performance in Saturday's 41-24 win over Cal Lutheran.
Edwards broke the CMS single-game rushing record by 50 yards, carrying 34 times for 324 yards and three touchdowns to help CMS come back from a 17-7 halftime deficit. He had 219 yards in the second half alone, as CMS went to a Wildcat-style formation, and he also completed two passes for 21 yards.
In addition to the single-game record, Edwards also broke the CMS career record in the process, going over the 4000-yard barrier and finishing the day with 4106 career yards, surpassing the old mark of 4044, which Ryan Gocong had held for 22 years since 2002.
Fittingly, Edwards also got to achieve his milestones on his Senior Day, sharing the achievement with a senior-laden offensive line which included left tackle
Owen Benjamin, center
Bryce Mey, right guard
Andre Nesbit, right tackle
Gavin Smithson and tight end
Kobey Jorgensen (as well as sophomore left guard
Enzo Benzan).
CMS will conclude its regular season on Saturday when it hosts Redlands for a 1 p.m. contest. as Edwards will try to add to his career records, which also includes 53 career rushing touchdowns, 15 more than any Stag had compiled before him.
