COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
John Laidlaw and
Liam Hall scored goals in the final 15 minutes of regulation as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team defeated Oglethorpe 2-0 to advance to the NCAA Regional Finals at Colorado College on Saturday.
With the win, the Stags improve to 15-3-3 on the year and move on to face fifth-ranked Colorado College in the regional finals tomorrow, after the Tigers pulled out a 3-2 win over Pacific Lutheran in its opening round game.
Miles Demarest had three saves to get the shutout win for CMS, which is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since winning a regional at Trinity (Texas) in 2019.
The game swung in a dramatic one-minute stretch when Oglethorpe's Daniel Amah had a shot cleared off the line by a CMS defender with 12:40 to go, and 55 seconds later, Laidlaw broke the scoreless deadlock with a goal off an assist from
Shaan Malik.
Demarest had a save just a minute and a half after the CMS goal to keep the Stags in front 1-0, and then Hall gave the Stags some insurance with 8:53 left off an assist from
James Gomez.
Oglethorpe had a chance to cut the lead in half in the 86th minute, but missed on a penalty kick and CMS was able to see the game out the rest of the way.
CMS will face Colorado College tomorrow at 1 p.m. local time (12 noon Pacific) for the right to advance to the NCAA Sectionals, which be held from Nov. 22-24 at a site to be determined.
