SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Andrew Ferrara-Jones broke a 64-64 tie with a three-pointer with 17 seconds left to give the UC Santa Cruz men's basketball team a 67-64 win over the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday at the Kaiser Permanente Warriors Development Complex.
With the loss, CMS levels its record at 2-2 on the season, while the Banana Slugs improve to 5-2 on the year with the win.
CMS trailed by seven points with four minutes left, but rallied back to pull even.
James Frye converted a lay-up to reduce the deficit to five, and
Neil Owens made a tough stepback three-pointer with 2:45 to go to make it a 61-59 game.
UC Santa Cruz answered with a three-pointer from Zino Okah, but
Caelan Jones came right back with a three-pointer for the Stags to make it 64-62.
AJ Rohosy then pulled the Stags even when he converted in the paint off an assist from
Caelan Jones off an offensive rebound with 37 seconds left. After a timeout though, Ferrara-Jones knocked down a contested three-pointer spotting up in the left corner for the decisive points. The Stags had two tightly-contested shots to try to tie in the closing seconds, but were unable to convert.
Rohosy and Jones had 13 points apiece to lead CMS, with Rohosy adding 10 rebounds for a double-double. OWens was also in double figures with 10 points, while
Reid Jones had eight points and seven rebounds.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it faces Whitman at the Kaiser Permanente Arena.
