SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -
AJ Rohosy had 20 points and
Neil Owens added 17 as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team earned a key 68-50 win over regional rival Whitman on Saturday at the Kaiser Permamente Warriors Development Complex.
With the win, CMS moves to 3-2 on the year and bounces back after dropping a game to UC Santa Cruz yesterday on a three-pointer with 17 seconds left. Whitman slips to 2-2 on the young season with the loss.
The Stags never trailed, but were in a tight one in the first half, but Owens hit two straight three-pointers in the final two minutes of the half to turn a 24-24 into a 30-24 lead before settling for a 30-26 lead at the break.
Caelan Jones and Owens then started the second half with threes to get the lead up to double digits, and a
Reid Jones three-point play capped off a 20-5 run spanning both halves to give CMS a 44-29 lead with 14:02 to play.
Whitman was able to respond with an 8-0 run to get the lead down to 44-37, but Rohosy had five straight CMS points and Owens hit another three-pointer to get the lead back up to 57-41.
Cahal Connolly gave the Stags their largest lead at 22 points off a
Brady Karich assist, and CMS ended up with the 18-point win.
The Stags held Whitman to just 33.3 percent shooting from the floor and 3-20 shooting from three-point territory.
CMS will be back in action on Tuesday when it opens SCIAC play with a home game against La Verne.
