Rohosy Dominates Inside to Lead Stags Basketball Past La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. - AJ Rohosy had a dominant effort with 33 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team to a 94-67 win over La Verne in the SCIAC opener for both teams on Tuesday night at Roberts Pavilion. 

With the win, CMS improves to 4-2 on the season and starts out league play at 1-0, while La Verne slips to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference. 

Rohosy, who is in his first year at CMS after graduating from Washington State in three years, shot 13-17 from the floor and 7-10 from the foul line on his way to 33 points, while grabbing nine offensive rebounds and nine defensive.

Rohosy had a double-double in the first half alone with 16 points and 11 rebounds to help CMS to a 44-32 lead at the break. He then scored 17 more in the second half, and punctuated his offensive output with a lob dunk off a feed from Neil Owens with 2:19 to go to make the score 90-60. 

Owens finished with 20 points on the night, including a stretch of three straight three-pointers in a span of 1:17 to push the CMS lead from 11 to 20 (68-48) with 11:35 to play and effectively put the game away. Owens matched Rohosy with 17 points in the second half. 

James Frye finished with 16 points and nine rebounds for CMS, while Reid Jones had seven points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and no turnovers (as well as three steals and two blocks defensively). Dahmaj Warren had 27 points to lead the way for La Verne. 

CMS will be back in action when it co-hosts the David Wells Classic this weekend, playing Southwestern at Pomona-Pitzer at 3 p.m. on Friday and then hosting Trinity at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
