CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team rallied from eight points down in the fourth quarter to take the lead into the final minute, but Cyriah Coleman hit a five-footer in the paint with 13 seconds left to put Clark ahead for good as the Cougars took a 66-63 road win over the Athenas on Friday on the first day of the David Wells Classic.
Clark moves to 7-1 on the year, bouncing back from its first loss of the season in its last game to Wesleyan (Conn.). CMS, which was led by 20 points from
Katie Resendiz, slips to 2-4 on the year with the loss.
CMS fell behind 55-47 with 7:56 to go on a Coleman lay-up, but Resendiz answered with a three-point play to cut it to five. After a Clark foul shot,
Ruva Kiara hit a jumper and a three-pointer to get the Athenas back within 56-55 with 5:40 to go.
Catherine Antwi hit a three-pointer for the Cougars, but
Renee Chong came right back with a three for the Athenas, and then Resendiz gave CMS its first lead of the fourth quarter at 60-59 with 3:50 to go.
Chong answered a Clark basket with a scoop layup with 2:26 left, and the score stayed frozen there until the final seconds, when Coleman got free in the middle of the CMS zone and was able to flip in a short jumper. After a stop, Kailey Rios hit two foul shots with five seconds left, and a last-second running three-pointer from Chong hit off the rim and came off as the Cougars held on.
Chong had seven of her 13 points in the fourth quarter to try to lead the CMS comeback, and finished with a game-high five steals, while Resendiz had a game-high nine rebounds to go with her 20 points. Kiara had nine points for the Athenas, while
Kayla Ishibashi and
Grace Florendo each had seven.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it takes on Carleton at 3 p.m. in a game which will be played at Pomona-Pitzer.
