Stags Basketball Earns Statement Win over No. 9 Trinity

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Will Householter matched his career high with 24 points to tie AJ Rohosy for team-high honors, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team pulled away from No. 9 Trinity for a dominant 87-65 win on Saturday at Roberts Pavilion on the second day of the David Wells Classic.

With the win, CMS moves to 6-2 on the season while handing Trinity its first loss, as the Tigers slip to 4-1.

Householter shot 8-13 from the floor and 6-9 from three-point territory on his way to 24 points, getting 19 of them in the second half when he hit five three-point attempts in a row. Rohosy was 9-14 from the floor and added a team-high nine rebounds. Reid Jones also had a career-high with 19 points and added three steals defensively.

Trinity actually had the upper hand in the early going, leading 16-8 before the Stags hit another gear and ended up taking a 41-29 lead into the break. CMS went on a 7-0 run to close to within 16-15 on a Rohosy lay-up on a feed from James Frye, and after Trinity temporarily stopped the slide with a three-pointer, the Stags scored the next nine points, capped by a Jones three-pointer and fast-break lay-up in succession, to go ahead 26-19 with 7:32 left in the half.

Neil Owens gave CMS its largest lead of the half at 13 points (34-21) with a fastbreak lay-up, and then went went end-to-end in five seconds to beat the buzzer with a bank shot in the paint to end the half with CMS ahead 41-29.

Trinity tried to fight back in the second half, and was within 50-39 with 14:38 to go, but a 10-0 run, featuring two Householter three-pointers sandwiched around back-to-back Rohosy baskets, made it 60-39 and effectively put the game away. Householter's fifth straight made three-pointer gave CMS its largest lead at 79-50, before the Stags settled for the 22-point final margin.

CMS shot 58.9 percent from the floor (33-56) and had 25 assists on 33 made baskets, while turning the ball over only 13 times against an aggressive Trinity defense. All nine players who saw action for the Stags had at least one assist, led by five apiece from Owens and Brady Karich, while Frye added four and Householter and Rohosy each had three.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Whittier in a SCIAC contest at 4 p.m.
