CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior
Riley Capuano earned the SCIAC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year honor, and sophomore
Sadie Drucker captured the Newcomer of the Year award in a vote of the league's coaches, the SCIAC office announced this morning.
Head Coach Marina Muncan, and assistant coaches Nick Spector and James Settles also earned the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year Award after leading the Athenas to their 14th straight SCIAC title.
Capuano was the individual champion at the SCIACs on Saturday, crossing the line in 21:57.8 to win her first league title after coming in second last year to two-time champion
Natalie Bitetti. Meredith Bloss also won the 2021 individual title, giving the Athenas the last four individual winners.
Drucker, who did not compete in cross country as a first-year last season, finished as the runner-up this season in 22:00.8 to earn top newcomer honors. Capuano and Drucker were joined on the All-SCIAC first team by
Angie Gushue, who finished fourth, and
Revere Schmidt, who came in sixth.
The Athenas were able to roll to the league title behind their top four finishers, ending the championship with 34 points, while Pomona-Pitzer had 62 points to finish a distant second. CMS has now won every league championship since 2010 (skipping the 2020 season due to the pandemic).
CMS will head to the NCAA West Regionals in Oregon on Nov. 16 to try to earn a team qualification to nationals, where it finished fourth a year ago.
