Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

CMS Women's Soccer Ties NYU 0-0 in 2024 Season Opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sadie Brown had three saves, including a fingertip save at full extension in the first half, and Annie McKinley had two key slide tackles in the closing minutes to break up NYU scoring opportunities, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team opened up the 2024 season with a 0-0 tie on Sunday at Pritzlaff Field.

CMS opens the year 0-0-1, while NYU starts out 0-0-2 after also tying Pomona-Pitzer 0-0 on its opening trip.

Brown's save came on a dangerous 20-yard shot from NYU in the 29th minute. The shot seemed destined for the inside of the left post, but Brown was able to extend and just get her fingertips on it, redirecting it outside the post by inches.

Most of the game was played between the penalty areas in 90-degree heat, but the game opened up in the final couple of minutes. NYU had a dangerous counter brewing in the 88th minute, but McKinley, who played all 90 minutes in the hot conditions, was able to slide tackle the ball away and prevent a 2-on-1 from developing.

After NYU had a corner kick in the final minute, Cate Lewison was able to intercept the ball at the top of the penalty area, and beat a pair of Violet defenders for an end-to-end rush. Her shot was saved with 20 seconds left, and NYU came right back the other way and had a chance to break into the CMS penalty area for one final chance, but McKinley slide tackled the ball away for a corner kick and the clock ran out before the Violets could put the ball back into play.

CMS had another good chance in the 77th minute, as Sena Howell was able to win the ball and create some space just outside the penalty area, but NYU goalie Riley Felsher was able to make the stop.

The Athenas will be back in action this weekend for a pair of games in Tacoma, Washington, taking on regional rivals Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.
