TACOMA, Wash. -
Flora Glantz scored from 25 yards out in the 63rd minute to pull the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team even, and the Athenas were able to come away with a 2-2 road tie against regional power Pacific Lutheran on Friday evening.
With the win, CMS moves to 0-0-2 on the season after starting out with a 0-0 tie against NYU last week. Pacific Lutheran, which has been to the last four NCAA Tournaments and six of the last seven, moves to 1-1-1 with the loss.
Pacific Lutheran scored a pair of goals early in the second half less than 10 minutes apart to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead. Glantz, though, was able to turn the momentum back and knot the score up with 27:39 left in the game, taking a short pass from
Ava Schmitt outside the box, and bending a shot from 25 yards out that deflected off the underside off the crossbar and over the line.
In the first half,
Carmel Randolph set up the opening goal when she took a corner kick from the left side of the field and bent a dangerous ball just inside the top of the six-yard box. The ball came down among a crowd of players, and deflected off a Pacific Lutheran defender and inside the net with 25:51 left in the first half.
The game opened up in the final 10 minutes as each team had quality chances to score.
Andra Marinescu had two key saves with less than six minutes left to prevent the Lutes from pulling ahead, while
Elsie Lindeman nearly won it for the Athenas when she stole a back pass, but Pacific Lutheran goalie Abby Winkler was just able to get her foot on Lindeman's shot and deflect it wide.
CMS had the better of play throughout, doubling up the Lutes in shot attempts 22-11, and holding a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Winkler was able to make 10 saves for Pacific Lutheran to help her team come away with the draw.
The Athenas will be back in action on Sunday when they complete their two-game road trip, meeting Puget Sound for a 12 p.m. contest.
