Riley Zitar's Goal Leads CMS Women's Soccer to 1-0 Win over Puget Sound

TACOMA, Wash. - Riley Zitar scored on a 25-yard blast in the 17th minute to provide the game's only goal as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer earned a 1-0 road win over Puget Sound on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, CMS moves to 1-0-2 on the season after ties against NYU and defending Northwest Conference champion Pacific Lutheran. Puget Sound slips to 0-3-1 on the year with the loss.

Zitar's goal came after Puget Sound cleared the ball out of its own penalty area. She was able to knock the ball down 30 yards away, and then run up and one-time a rocket that sailed into the upper-left corner to put the Athenas in front with 16:15 elapsed in the first half.

CMS then protected the lead the rest of the way, as Sadie Brown earned her second shutout of the season in two starts, while center backs Emma Fogg and Annie McKinley helped anchor the defense in front of her.

The Athenas will next be in action when they host two home games next weekend, facing St. Catherine on Friday at 11 a.m. and UC Santa Cruz on Saturday at 11 a.m.
