CLAREMONT, Calif. - Five different players scored goals, including the first collegiate goals from sophomores
Jordan Yates and
Frankie Fragola, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team dominated a battle of unbeatens by defeating St. Catherine's 5-0 on Friday at Pritzlaff Field.
The win moves CMS to 2-0-2 on the season, while St. Catherine's slips to 3-1 on the year with the loss.
Cate Lewison and
Ava Schmitt had first-half goals, and
Tori Holden joined Yates and Fragola by tallying the second half. Four other players also contributed assists, while
Andra Marinescu had four saves to get her first shutout of the year and second of her career.
Lewison got CMS on the board just 5:28 into the contest when she got inside the goalmouth to tap home a cross from
Kaitlyn Helfrich. Just over eight minutes later, Schmitt scored when she got on the back end of a cross from
Ava Allen to make it a 2-0 game just 13:43 in.
The Athenas again wasted little time getting on the board again in the second half as
Riley Zitar took a free kick from 35 yards out and played a perfect ball inside the six, where Holden was able to get inside position on her defender and one time it into the net to make it 3-0 just 2:30 into the second half.
Yates got on the board with 13:54 left to play when
McKenzie Emmons played a long ball out of the back. The ball took a hop, and Yates was able to outmaneuver her defender and get in one-on-one with the St. Catherine's keeper. Once inside the 18, Yates played a perfect chip over the keeper and under the crossbar to make the score 4-0.
Fragola added another score just 2:05 later, when she took a 40-yard free kick that dipped under the crossbar and made it through the fingertips of the St. Catherine's goalie.
CMS finished with a 20-5 edge in shots on the day and a 15-3 edge in shots on goal. The Athenas will be back in action again tomorrow when they face UC Santa Cruz at 11 a.m. at Pritzlaff Field.
