CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Thomas Walker scored four goals and
Gavin Netherton and
Nick Kennedy each added three as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team, ranked No. 1 in Division III, captured a 13-9 win over Division I CSU Fullerton on Wednesday evening at Axelrood Pool.
With the win, CMS moves to 4-5 on the season, with all five losses coming to Division I teams ranked in the top 20. CSU Fullerton falls to 4-8 with the loss.
CMS fell behind 2-0 early, but scored three goals in a row to pull ahead 3-2, with Walker tying it on his first of two penalty shots and
Ivey Gehring put the Stags ahead with 19 seconds left in the first quarter.
Netherton opened the second quarter with his first to make it 4-2, and Walker answered a Titan goal with two in a row to make it a 6-3 CMS lead. CSU Fullerton got back within a goal at the half (6-5), but
Donovan Davidson and Walker scored two straight goals in the third to make it 9-6.
Netherton and
Cristian Pang answered Titan goals in the fourth, and Kennedy closed out the scoring with two straight goals to make the final 13-9.
Jake Taylor had 10 saves in goal for CMS to get the win, and had two steals, tying
Hassen Hove,
Auggie Aliaga and Walker for team-high honors.
CMS will be back in action when it opens SCIAC play on Saturday with a home game against Chapman at 11 a.m.
