CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Cate Lewison and
Kaitlyn Helfrich scored goals in the first half off of corner kicks from
Riley Zitar as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team took a 2-1 win over Whittier on Saturday evening at Pritzlaff Field.
The Athenas improve to 5-1-3 overall and 3-1 in the SCIAC with the win, while Whittier slips to 4-1-2 overall and 2-1-1 in SCIAC play with the loss.
CMS struck first at the 14:48 mark in the first half when Zitar sent a corner kick inside the six-yard box. The ball took a couple of deflections and ended up in the middle of the goalmouth, and Lewison was able to slot it home through a scrum of people for her team-high fifth goal of the season.
The Athenas added a second goal with 10:57 left in the half when Zitar sent a corner kick to the top of the six-yard box.
Annie McKinley won the header and sent it forward into the goalmouth area, and Helfrich was able to redirect it inside the right post to make it a 2-0 game.
Whittier got a goal back on a penalty kick in the second half with just over 30 minutes to play, but the CMS defense held firm the rest of the way. The Athenas finished with an 18-9 edge in shots and a lopsided 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
CMS will be back in action in a week when it travels across the street to face Pomona-Pitzer at 11 a.m.
