NORTHFIELD, Minn. -
Collin Ross,
Rafael Otero and
Heiko Schultz scored first half goals as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team took a 3-1 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday at St. Olaf.
With the win, CMS now stands at 2-0-1 on the season, after tying Luther and defeating Bethesda on opening weekend at home last weekend. Mary Hardin-Baylor slips to 1-2-1 on the year with the loss.
Ross got CMS on the board first in the 15th minute, when he got the ball outside the box, cut inside past one defender, and then rifled a curling shot that tucked just inside the right post for his third goal of the year. Otero then made it a 2-0 game just over 10 minutes later when he took a free kick from just outside the box, and sent a blast through the wall and inside the left post to make it a 2-0 game at the 24:56 mark.
The Cru got one goal back with 8:25 left in the half to close to within 2-1, but Schultz responded less than two minutes later.
Jacoby Lockman sent a centering pass to the top of the six-yard box that Schultz nearly blindly back-heeled into the net. His first effort, though, was deflected by a Mary Hardin-Baylor defender, but the rebound popped right back to him and he blasted it into the net to give the Stags back a two-goal lead.
CMS managed the game well in the second half, allowing the Cru only three shot attempts after halftime.
Miles Demarest made saves on all three, finishing with five for the game, to get the win.
CMS will be back in action on Monday when it takes on St. Olaf for the second game of its two-game trip.
