CLAREMONT, Calif. -
AJ Rohosy had 36 points and 16 rebounds, including the go-ahead foul shots with 27 seconds left, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team took a thrilling 99-97 win over Redlands on Wednesday evening at Roberts Pavilion.
The Stags remain undefeated in the SCIAC with the win, moving to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while Redlands slips to 11-3 overall and 3-2 in conference. Rohosy had his third straight big game in conference, including 33 points and 18 rebounds against La Verne, 29 points and 18 rebounds against Whittier, and 36 points and 16 rebounds against Redlands, moving his averages to 32.7 points and 17.3 rebounds in SCIAC.
Rohosy shot 15-21 from the floor and 6-8 from the foul line, while adding three blocks on the defensive end. The big effort was close to being for naught, though, as Redlands twice took the lead in the last two minutes. Jhace Boston scored in the paint to put the Bulldogs ahead 95-94 with 1:32 to go, but Rohosy was able to beat the shot clock with a layup in the paint with 1:01 to go to give CMS the 96-95 lead.
Chozen Amadi made two foul shots with 39 seconds left to put Redlands up 97-96, but Rohosy came back with two of his own 12 seconds later to give the Stags the lead for good. He then got a defensive rebound off a missed Redlands three-pointer and split two at the line with eight seconds left, and Omari Ferguson's runner in the lane fell off the rim in the final seconds as CMS earned the hard-fought 99-97 win.
The Stags trailed 46-45 at the half, and were down 60-56 early in the second before
Reid Jones scored on a layup and then fed
Caelan Jones for a three-pointer to give CMS its first lead of the second half at 61-60. A
Will Householter three-point play finished off an 8-0 run for the Stags and made the score 64-60.
Reid Jones gave CMS its largest lead at 80-69 with 10:43 to go on a fast-break layup, but Redlands responded with a 10-0 run to cut the lead to one. Rohosy scored off of a media timeout to make it 82-79, but Amadi hit a three-pointer to tie and Ferguson scored a fast-break lay-up with 6:35 left to give the Bulldogs the lead back.
Reid Jones snapped a 91-91 tie with 2:27 left with a three-pointer, but Ferguson and Boston scored the next two baskets to give Redlands its 95-94 lead.
Caelan Jones finished with 23 points for CMS, knocking down five three-pointers, while
Reid Jones had 17 and
Neil Owens added 13 for the Stags, who shot 65.5 percent for the game (39-69). Ferguson had 27 points and Amadi had 25 for Redlands, which made 15 three-pointers in the losing cause.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it takes on Chapman for a 4 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion.
