CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Neil Owens made a 15-foot baseline fadeaway with 4.3 seconds left to break a 69-69 tie and give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team a 71-69 win over Chapman on Saturday at Roberts Pavilion.
AJ Rohosy had 24 points and 12 rebounds for the Stags, who improve to 10-3 overall and remain the league's only undefeated team at 4-0. Chapman slips to 10-5 overall and 3-3 in league play.
The final minute saw the two teams go back and forth. Rohosy made a lay-up in close to put CMS ahead 67-64 with 1:08 left, but Blakeley Stoughton knotted it with a three-pointer at the top of the key for Chapman. Rohosy then fed
Matt Meredith out of a double team, who drew a foul with 36 seconds left and made both foul shots to put the Stags back in front.
Stoughton then drove the basket to knot the score back up with 13 seconds left, and CMS opted not to use a timeout. Owens dribbled up the floor and attacked the basket, and then retreated along the left baseline, before pulling up for a 15-foot fadeaway as he fell to the floor.
After the ball went through, Chapman advanced the ball up the left sideline, and had a chance to steal the win back, but Stoughton's three-pointer as the clock expired missed short.
CMS trailed by as many as seven in the second half, and was down 61-55 with five minutes left after two straight three-pointers by Cruz Billings. Rohosy answered back with a jumper in the paint, and
Caelan Jones hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 61-60 with 3:19 to go.
After Chapman hit two free throws, Meredith made an 18-foot jumper to get the Stags within one. The Panthers then split two foul shots, and Jones hit a big three-pointer with 1:40 left off a Meredith feed to put CMS in front 65-64. Rohosy then blocked a shot at one end, and scored in the paint off an Owens feed, to set up the last-minute finish.
Jones finished with 13 points on the day to join Rohosy in double figures, while Owens had nine, including the game-winner. Rohosy's 24 and 12 gave him four straight 20-10 double-doubles in the first four SCIAC games (including two 30-10 double-doubles, with a 36-point, 16-rebound game against Redlands in a 99-97 win on Wednesday). The Stags had a 37-20 rebounding advantage on the day.
CMS will be right back in action on Monday night when it travels to La Verne for a 7 p.m. contest.
