Stags Basketball Stays Unbeaten in SCIAC with 96-68 Win at La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. - Centers AJ Rohosy (22) and Cahal Connolly (13) combined for 35 points on 16-19 shooting as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team rolled to a 96-68 win at La Verne on Monday evening at the La Verne Sports Pavilion.

With the win, CMS remains the only unbeaten team in SCIAC at 5-0, while improving to 11-3 overall. La Verne falls to 3-10 overall and 0-6 in the SCIAC with the loss.

Rohosy, who was named the SCIAC Athlete of the Week earlier in the day, finishing with 22 points on 10-12 shooting in 25 minutes of action, and was one rebound shy of recording his fifth double-double in five league games with a game-high nine boards. Connolly came off the bench and shot 6-7 from the floor for a career-high 13 points in 12 minutes. Stuart McCallum also shot 2-2 in the closing minutes to make CMS 18-21 from the 5 spot overall.

Neil Owens was perfect from the floor, shooting 4-4 overall and 3-3 from three for 11 points.  Caelan Jones was also in double figures with 12. Joey Kennedy, who missed last year with an injury, tallied his first six career points. The Stags shot 40-66 from the floor on the dat and 8-14 from three-point territory as a team.

CMS went on a 14-1 run early to move ahead 20-8, with Jones starting the run with five straight points, and Will Householter adding four. The Leopards got back within 25-15, but Owens hit a jumper and a three-pointer to push the lead back up to 30-15. Matt Meredith had a tip-in at the buzzer of the first half to give CMS a 47-30 lead at the break.

La Verne closed to within 13 points twice early in the second half, the second at 50-37, but Jones had five points and Rohosy three in an 8-0 run that pushed the lead up to 21 and put the game away.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night at home for a big game with Cal Lutheran, in a rematch of last year's SCIAC Championship, which the Stags won at Cal Lutheran to earn an NCAA bid.
