Athenas Basketball Falls on the Road to Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. - The Redlands women's basketball team broke open a tight game with a 21-6 third quarter, and was able to earn an 81-55 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday evening at Currier Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Athenas fall to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in conference, while Redlands improves to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in league play.

Katie Resendiz was the lone Athena in double figures with 12 points on 6-12 shooting. First-year Lauren Dex saw her first action of the season and contributed a three-point play for CMS.

Ruva Kiara hit two foul shots to bring CMS within 31-25 with 1:41 left in the first half before Redlands was able to take a 33-25 at the half, and then open the second half on a 5-0 run to move ahead 38-25 with a 7-0 run spanning both halves. A Grace Florendo jumper brought the Athenas within 40-29, but an 8-0 Bulldog run essentially put the game away.

Carly Hicks and Kayden Sanders each had 15 points to lead Redlands, while Colbi Zorich had 13 points and Leila Hosn added 12. CMS was playing for the first time in 12 days, after having consecutive games postponed due to the Eaton Fire, located near the campuses of Occidental and Caltech.

The Athenas will be back in action on Saturday when they host Chapman for a 2 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion.
