Athenas Basketball Rallies Back to Tie, But Falls in Closing Seconds at Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team used a 10-0 run to pull even at 58-58 in the final minute of regulation, but Pomona-Pitzer was able to score the final six points, including four at the foul line in the final seconds to seal it, as the Sagehens earned a 64-58 win on Saturday at Voelkel Gymnasium.

With the win, Pomona-Pitzer improves to 10-7 overall and 5-3 in the SCIAC, while CMS slips to 5-11 overall and 1-6 in league play.

Renee Chong had 27 points, one off her career high, and led the late comeback with the first six points to close the gap to 58-54. She then fed Amanda Kerner for a jumper to pull within two, and Grace Florendo scored on a fast break after the 15th rebound from Katie Resendiz

Emily Lee was able to give Pomona-Pitzer the lead back with 36 seconds left on a driving lay-up, and the Athenas had three chance to tie but were unable to convert. Jadyn Lee then made two foul shots with eight seconds left to make it a two-possession game, and then added two more with one second left after grabbing a defensive rebound.

Resendiz had 11 of her 15 rebounds at the defensive end. Jadyn Lee finished with 17 for Pomona-Pitzer while Emily Lee had 16.

CMS will be back in action on Monday when it hosts Occidental at 7 p.m. in a game which rescheduled after it was postponed on Jan. 8.
