Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CMS Men's Basketball Pulls Away for 86-68 Win over Occidental

CLAREMONT, Calif. - AJ Rohosy had 20 of his 29 points in the first half, and Reid Jones had 13 of his career-high 22 in the second half, to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team to an 86-68 road win over Occidental on Monday evening at Rush Gymnasium.

With the win, CMS moves to 13-4 overall on the year and 7-1 in the SCIAC at the midway point of the league schedule. Occidental slips to 5-8 overall and 3-4 in the SCIAC with the loss.

Rohosy was 9-11 from the floor in the first half on his way to 20 points, staking the Stags to a 45-33 lead at intermission. Occidental was able to claw back into it, closing the gap to 50-46 with 15 minutes remaining.

Jones scored the next four points to get the Stags back up by eight, and then after Occidental got it to 56-50, the Stags scored the next 13 points to pull away. Caelan Jones started the run with a jumper, Neil Owens followed with a three-pointer, and Matt Meredith capped off the run with a layup off a feed from Rohosy.

Reid Jones tied his career high with five steals, in addition to his 22 points, which included a career-high four three-pointers (on six attempts). Jones first had five steals in his college debut last year against UC Santa Cruz, and matched it again on Saturday in a double-overtime win at Pomona-Pitzer. His 22 points eclipsed his previous best of 19, set earlier this year against Trinity.

Rohosy finished 12-17 from the floor on the night with nine rebounds, falling one shy of a double-double. In eight conference games, he is now averaging 26.8 points and 12.8 rebounds, while shooting 69.8 percent from the floor. Owens finished with 14 points, and now has 952 in his career, including 743 as an undergraduate at Redlands, and 209 with the Stags so far this year.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Caltech for a 4 p.m. contest.
