CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Swarthmore men's basketball team used a 16-1 run in the final minutes to turn a six-point deficit into a nine-point lead as the Garnet took a 60-51 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday at Roberts Pavilion.
Swarthmore improves to 8-4 on the season with the win, while CMS, which was led by 17 points and 14 rebounds from
AJ Rohosy, falls to 8-3 and sees its six-game winning streak snapped.
The Stags went ahead 48-42 with 7:40 left on a Rohosy foul shot, but did not make a field goal from the 10:04 mark (a
Neil Owens three-pointer that put CMS ahead 46-42) until a
Will Householter layup stopped the 16-1 run with 1:34 to go and cut the Swarthmore lead to 58-51.
A three-point play from Zander Jimenez gave Swarthmore the lead for good at 50-49 with 4:39 to play, and Jimenez followed with a three-pointer to push the lead to four. Eddie Paquette then converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:48 to go to stretch the lead to 56-49.
Reid Jones was the only other player besides Rohosy to finish the game in double figures for the Stags (10 points). CMS shot just 3-27 from three-point territory for the game, and just 1-16 in the second half as Swarthmore was able to come away with the road win. Jimenez led the Garnet with 16 points off the bench, while Cal Hanson added 13.
CMS will be back in action when it travels to Occidental to resume SCIAC play on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. contest.
