CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Robert Litscher threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to
Ben Kim in the fourth quarter to get the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team within 14-10, but Redlands was able to hang on and take a 17-10 win over the Stags on Saturday at Zinda Field.
CMS slips to 2-3 on the season with the loss, after falling in its home opener after playing its first four games on the road. Redlands moves to 3-2 overall with the win.
The Stags trailed 14-3 at the half and stayed in striking distance, until Litscher found Kim breaking down the left sideline on third-and-long for a 59-yard strike to make the score 14-10.
On the ensuing possession,
Tom Burton forced a fumble that was recovered by
Grady Johnson at the Redlands 40-yard line, giving the Stags a short field to try to take the lead. The Bulldog defense was able to come up with the stop it needed and then they killed most of the clock before converting a field goal with 1:09 to go to make the score 17-10.
Tobey Schmidt, who was 26-31 passing on the day, threw a key 13-yard pass to Nathan Anderson on 4th-and-2 to get hte ball into the CMS red zone at the 19-yard line, killing two more minutes of clock before the field goal.
CMS started on its own 25 after a touchback, and got the ball into Redlands territory when Litscher carried for 14 yards to the Redlands 44, but the Bulldogs were able to force four straight incompletions to turn the ball over on downs with 16 seconds left and seal the win.
Kim finished with four catches for 102 yards to lead the CMS offense, while
George Kruger and
Gabe Gangi-Saroukhanioff led the defense with 11 tackles apiece.
Harry Zhou and
Jack Davis each had sacks for the Stags.
CMS will be back in action next Saturday when it hosts La Verne at 1 p.m.
