CMS Football Comes Back from 10 Down to Defeat La Verne in Overtime

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Samuel Brewer tied the score with a 20-yard field goal on the final play of regulation, and Robert Litscher connected with Roman Ramirez on a 23-yard touchdown pass for the walk-off win in overtime as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team rallied from a 16-6 fourth quarter deficit for a 22-19 overtime win over La Verne on Saturday at Zinda Field.

George Kruger had a standout day with 20 tackles (11 solo) for the Stags, who improve to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the SCIAC. La Verne slips to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in league play.

La Verne appeared to be in good shape when they connected on a 21-yard field goal with 6:24 left in the fourth quarter to take a 16-6 lead. CMS, though, was able to come back and get a key touchdown to make it a three-point game, with Litscher scoring on a one-yard keeper with 4:10 left.

After CMS got the key stop it needed, Jake Son had a pivotal 33-yard punt return to get the ball all the way to the La Verne 35-yard line. The Stags got inside the five-yard line, but were stopped and had a fourth-and-goal at the 3-yard line when they called timeout with three seconds left. They elected to go for the tying field goal, and Brewer split the uprights to send to the overtime.

CMS won the toss and elected to start on defense, and Harry Zhou and Andrew Carrasquillo combined on a key sack that forced La Verne to settle for three points. After Cooper Nixon ran three times for 12 yards to get a first down on offense, a holding penalty pushed CMS back to the 23-yard line. On second down, though, Litscher found an open Ramirez over the middle for the clinching score.

Nixon finished with 18 carries for 86 yards on the ground, including a two-yard run for the first CMS score. Litscher was 12-for-28 for 148 yards and the winning touchdown. Kruger had 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble to go with his 20 tackles defensively, while Grady Johnson and Gabe Gangi-Saroukhanioff each had eight tackles.

CMS will be back in action next Saturday for a road game at Chapman.
