ORANGE, Calif. -
Cooper Nixon ran for a career-high 207 yards, including two big second-half touchdowns to help force overtime, but the Chapman football team was able to win it in the extra sessions 37-31 over the Stags on Saturday evening at Chapman Stadium.
The Panthers remain undefeated in the SCIAC with the win at 5-0, while improving to 5-2 overall, while CMS slips to 3-4 overall and 1-4 in the league, after winning in overtime last week over La Verne. All seven games the Stags have played this year have been decided by one possession, with eight points being the widest margin (although Lake Forest scored a touchdown with 6.2 seconds left to fall to CMS 14-7 in the opener).
Nixon had an 84-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half to put the Stags ahead 17-16. Chapman had led 16-3 late in the half, and earned a stop with 2:24 to go, but a roughing the kicker penalty gave the Stags second life, and quarterback
Peter Boehm rushed in from nine yards out with 59 seconds left to get CMS within 16-10 at the break.
The 17-16 lead after Nixon's big run held until Chapman went back ahead with 4:25 left on a two-yard run from Andrew Latu. The two-point conversion made it 24-17, but CMS was able to drive the length of the field to pull even on a one-yard Nixon carry.
Boehm had a 14-yard pass to
James Ryan to get the Stags into Chapman territory, and then a 39-yard pass to Ryan got the ball all the way down to the one-yard line. Two plays later, Nixon plunged in, and
Samuel Brewer's extra point knotted the score at 24-24.
Chapman had a chance to win in regulation, but
Michael Houk blocked a potential winning field goal attempt.
Andrew Carrasquillo forced a fumble on the previous play, but the Panthers were able to recover.
CMS had the ball first in overtime, and Boehm connected with
Tyler Chelew for a third-down touchdown pass to put the Stags up 31-24. Chapman, though, answered in two plays, with Latu rushing for 20 yards, and quarterback Tyler Pacheco then rushing in from five. The Panthers then had the ball first in the second extra session, and Pacheco ran 24 yards down to the one-yard line, and Latu was able to punch it in on second down.
Chapman went for a two-point converstion, and
Tom Burton was able to intercept the conversion attempt to keep it a 37-31 lead, giving CMS a chance to win with a touchdown and extra point. An 11-yard pass from Boehm to
Wilson Schwartz got CMS down to the 14, but the Stags stalled there as the Panthers held on for the win.
Boehm finished 14-for-24 passing for 147 yards and a touchdown.
George Kruger led CMS with 13 tackles (10 solo), one week after tallying 20 in the La Verne win.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Cal Lutheran for a 1 p.m. contest, that will also serve as the program's Senior Day.
