SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team finished in fourth place, one shot ahead of Redlands in fifth, at the eight-team Hollins Cup hosted by UC Santa Cruz.
The tournament was played on Sunday and Tuesday, with Monday being rained out, and the Athenas ended with a 641. Emory came in first place with a 605, and Pomona-Pitzer (626) and WashU (631) were second and third. Redlands (642), Occidental (668), UC Santa Cruz (672) and Chapman (718) rounded out the team leaderboard.
Alisa Ching and
Jessie Kong finished tied for seventh at +7, although Kong was playing as an individual. If she had been in the five scoring golfers for the Athenas, they would have finished 15 shots higher and been tied with Pomona-Pitzer for second.
Ching shot a 75 on Tuesday to move up five spots into the top 10, after a round on Sunday that featured three straight birdies on holes 8-10. Kong also had a stretch of three straight birdies on Tuesday on the 4th through 6th holes.
Esther Lee finished at +14, but had a key birdie on her final hole that put CMS one shot ahead of Redlands for fourth.
Ella Chiu also had a top-20 finish in 16th place out of 51 golfers, while
Precilla Tea came in 31st.
CMS will next be in action during the spring season when it will try to make another strong postseason run, after finishing third at the NCAA Division III Championships a year ago.
