ORANGE, Calif. -
Jeffrey Koretz had a career-high five goals and
Gavin Netherton added a career-high four as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team earned a 17-11 road win over Chapman on Wednesday evening.
The win was the seventh in a row for CMS, which is ranked No. 16 in the nation and No. 1 in Division III, as it moves to 11-4 on the year.
Jake Taylor had 16 saves for the Stags, while
Nick Kennedy had four assists.
The Stags never trailed, taking a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter on goals from
Luke (Bear) Weigle, Netherton and Koretz. Kennedy gave CMS a 4-2 lead early in the second quarter, before the Panthers pulled back even at 4-4.
However, CMS scored on three straight possessions in a span of 45 seconds, with Koretz scoring at the 3:25 mark, Netherton scoring at 3:00 even, and Koretz finishing off a hat trick at 2:40.
After Chapman got back within 7-5 at the half, CMS scored five straight goals to start the second half and take control.
Ivey Gehring scored two straight to push the lead to 9-5, and Koretz scored his fourth and fifth in the run around a goal from
Thomas Walker as the Stags went ahead 12-5 with 2:12 left in the third, and were able to coast to the 17-11 win.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday at home when it hosts La Verne for an 11 a.m. contest.
