CLAREMONT, Calif. - Kate Short headed in a corner kick with 2:50 left in the first overtime session as Puget Sound was able to take a 1-0 win over the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer's South Athletic Complex.
The loss ends the CMS season at 13-4-3, while Puget Sound improves to 14-2-5 and moves on to face Pomona-Pitzer in the regional finals tomorrow.
Hayden Goodman took the winning corner kick for the Loggers, sending it to the far side of the penalty area. Short outjumped everyone for the ball, and sent a header back across the goalmouth and into the upper-right corner.
CMS had a 12-8 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks on the day. The Athenas had a late goal in regulation from
Elsie Lindeman waived off due to offsides, and hit the crossbar twice.
Riley Zitar had a shot from 25 yards out tipped off the crossbar in the first half, while
Preslie Lampitt hit the crossbar with just over 10 minutes left.
Sadie Brown had five saves for the Athenas, including a tough one just 1:40 into the game before the Athenas settled in.
