Dominant Fourth Quarter Carries Athenas Basketball Past Babson 82-66

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Tanya Ghai had 24 points on 6-9 shooting from beyond the arc, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team broke open a tie game after three quarters, to take an 82-66 win over Babson on the second day of the David Wells Classic on Saturday evening at Roberts Pavilion. 

With the win, CMS now stands at 6-1 on the season, including five straight wins. Babson, which defeated Pomona-Pitzer yesterday on the first day of the David Wells Classic, now stands at 4-4 with the defeat. 

Haylie Wang added 19 points off the bench for the Athenas on 6-10 shooting, while Katie Resendiz had 17 on 8-13 shooting. 

With the score tied 54-54 after three, CMS outscored Babson 28-12 over the final 10 minutes, starting the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run to take a lead it would not relinquish. Laura Strenk started the run with a driving layup, and Katie Resendiz followed with a three-point play on a bank shot in the paint. Resendiz then kicked the ball out to Wang for a three-pointer. 

Babson stopped the run on an Alessa Mendoza lay-up, but Ghai followed with a step-back three-pointer to push the lead to nine. The Beavers had a strong push to get back within 67-63 with the ball, but CMS earned a stop and Caleigh Edwards hit two foul shots to make it a six-point line.

Ghai then had a three-pointer to push it to nine, her sixth trey of the game, and Renee Chong had a backbreaking three-pointer to get the lead up to double digits at 75-65 with 2:21 to go.

CMS shot 10-24 from three-point territory. while holding Babson to 6-17, and the Athenas finished with only eight turnovers as a team, while tallying 11 steals, led by four from Edwards. 

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to La Verne for its SCIAC opener.
