MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team overcame a 20-point deficit to take fourth-quarter lead on the second day of the STEM Classic at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, but the Athenas came up just short in a 58-51 loss to Case Western in the championship game on Saturday evening.
Case Western improved to 2-0 on the season with the win while CMS dropped to 1-1 on the year with the loss. Mya Hartjes led the Spartans with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds while Emily Plachta finished with 19.
Caleigh Edwards recorded a a team-high 18 points, making 7-of-13 attempts for the Athenas, and
Katie Resendiz added 15 points and three steals for CMS. Edwards earned All-Tournament team honors for the Athenas after scoring 18 points in both of the two contests, including yesterday's 56-51 overtime win over host MSOE.
The Athenas trailed 15-5 through 10 minutes of play and were down 31-11 late in the half, but ended the second period on a 5-0 run to spark momentum going into the second half. CMS started the third period on a 13-5 run to get within seven, 36-29,after Resendiz made a jumper with 2:59 to play.
Edwards converted an and-one jumper at the buzzer to end the third and opened the fourth with a three-pointer to get the Athenas within three, 39-36 with 9:41 remaining.
Laura Strenk tied the game at 41-41 and Edwards made another three-pointer to give CMS a 44-41 lead with 7:23 left to play. Resendiz made two free throws and
Renee Chong converted a jumper to take a 49-47 advantage, but the Spartans closed the game on a 11-2 run, giving the Athenas their first defeat of the season.
CMS will be back in action for its home opener against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday at Roberts Pavilion at 6 p.m.
