WHITTIER, Calif. - First-year forward
Haylie Wang had a personal-best 21 points as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team overcame a Whittier tying basket at the buzzer to take a 67-58 overtime road win on Saturday afternoon at Jacobs Court.
With the win, CMS moves to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in league play, including seven straight wins since falling in the championship game of the STEM Classic at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Whittier falls to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the SCIAC with the loss.
Wang put CMS ahead to stay with a jumper in overtime, before
Katie Resendiz stretched the lead to four points at 59-55 with 2:39 left in the extra session. Whittier knocked down a three-pointer to close to within one, but Wang hit two clutch foul shots to get the lead back to three.
After CMS earned a stop,
Tanya Ghai knocked down two foul shots to make the score 63-58 and help seal it. The Athenas then knocked down four more foul shots in the closing seconds to make the final score 67-58.
CMS led by as many as seven in the fourth quarter, 48-41 after a
Caleigh Edwards jumper, but Whittier came all the way back to tie it on a buzzer-beating jumper from Brooklyn Giles. Wang's three-pointer with 46 seconds left in the put the Athenas ahead 42-36, and
Renee Chong made two foul shots to close out the quarter and give CMS a 44-39 lead heading into the final frame.
Resendiz had 12 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double for the Athenas, while
Laura Strenk had seven assists and one turnover at the point guard spot.
CMS will have three weeks off before returning to action on Dec. 28 for a non-league game against Hamline.
