Athenas Basketball Leads Wire-to-Wire in 73-60 Win over Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team opened on a 10-0 run and never trailed as it captured a 73-60 win over Caltech on Saturday at Roberts Pavilion. 

With the win, CMS improves to 6-12 overall and 2-7 in the SCIAC, pulling even in league play with Caltech, which falls to 8-9 overall and 2-7 in the SCIAC. 

Kayla Ishibashi had six early points to help CMS off to the 10-0 lead, before finishing with a season-high 11 on 5-of-7 shooting. Renee Chong had 15 points on 6-8 shooting (3-3 from three-point territory), and all 12 players who saw action for the Athenas scored, as they shot 50.8 percent on the day (30-59). 

Georgeanna Dempsey saw her first action since opening day due to injury, and gave CMS a lift off the bench with six points and four rebounds.

Caltech overcame the slow start and got back to within 14-13 in the first quarter, before Katie Resendiz answered with a layup to make it 16-13 heading into the second. Amanda Kerner hit a three-pointer to get the lead from one point up to four and Dempsey closed out the half with a basket to give CMS a 32-27 lead heading into the break. 

Chong started the second half with a three-pointer and Grace Florendo scored in transition to get the lead back to double figures.  Naima Joseph closed the third quarter with two straight baskets to make it a 54-40 game going in the fourth, and Chong started the fourth with two straight threes to make it 60-40, and the Athenas were able to cruise in for the win. 

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Redlands for a 7 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion.
