CLAREMONT, Calif. - First-year
Celestina Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne won 6-0, 6-0 in her first collegiate dual, and first-year
Rebecca Kong provided the clinch with a 7-5 tiebreaker win in the second set for 6-3, 7-6 win as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team edged Point Loma Nazarene 4-3 in its spring opener on Friday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
The Athenas dropped the doubles point, although
Muduo Zhou and
Ella Brissett were able to pick up a 6-3 win at No. 2. However, the Sea Lions earned 7-5 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to take a 1-0 lead into singles.
Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne quickly evened the score with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6, not dropping a game to pick up a win in her dual debut.
Lindsay Eisenman followed with a quick 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, and Zhou finished off a singles-doubles sweep with a 6-4, 6-3 win to make it 3-1 for the Athenas.
As the No. 1 and No. 3 singles courts both went into a third set, there was some pressure on Kong to close it out. She trailed 4-2 in the tiebreaker, but rallied back ahead 5-4, before Anna Pallencaoe was able to level the tiebreaker 5-5. Kong, though, came through with the next two points to seal the individual win and the team win. Point Loma earned the final two points in singles to make the final score 4-3.
CMS will be back in action next Friday night, when it hosts Brandeis for a 5 p.m. contest.
