CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Giselle Lai, who missed the opening weekend for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team a week ago, had seven RBI in the doubleheader as the Athenas rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Occidental, winning the opener 15-0 and taking the nightcap 12-4.
With the wins, CMS moves to 4-0 on the young season, while Occidental falls to 1-2 with the losses.
The Athenas fired on all cylinders in the opening game, scoring four runs in the first, four in the second, four in the third, and three in the fourth to score 15 runs in only three at-bats. In the first inning
Brooke Goodman singled to center with the bases loaded and two outs and came all the way around to score on an error to make it a 4-0 lead.
In the second inning, the Athenas tacked on four more on a pair of two-run singles from
Delanie Stevens and Lie to go ahead 8-9. The third inning saw Lai get her second two-run single and Goodman add a bases loaded walk for her third RBI of the day. In the fourth, Lai picked up her fifth RBI with a bases loaded walk, which was followed by an RBI walk from
Riley Cooper and an
Averi O RBI single.
Hannah Adams threw three innings to get the win for the Athenas, allowing one hit and striking out four, while
Caroline Cappetto came on in relief and threw two innings, allowing one hit in her college debut.
In the nightcap, Occidental took the lead 1-0 in the top of the second, but the Athenas were able to put together a six-run bottom half to take control, as Lai had a two-run double to cap it off.
Mrdah Murali tied it with an RBI walk, and
Elizabeth Bell broke the tie with a two-run single before
Ana Federico tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly.
Imani Ferris had a two-run double in the third to make it an 8-1 lead, before Occidental was able to score three times in the fourth close to within 8-4, but the Athenas were able to walk it off with four runs in the fifth on an RBI single from
Ana Federico, a two-run single from Stevens, and an RBI single from
Danica Stirling.
Ella Yerkes threw four innings to get the win for CMS, allowing two earned runs. Ferris and Stevens were each 2-for-2 with two RBI for the Athenas, while Stirling and Federico were 2-for-3.
CMS will have three weeks off before returning to action with a home doubleheader against Illinois Wesleyan on March 8.
